VR ENVIRONMENT ARTIST— RODRIGO BREA

Posted on April 22, 2021

Rodrigo Brea is an environment artist for video games, currently working as a full time artist at Survios. He graduated the 2 year Digital Production Program at Gnomon School of Visual Effects (Dec 2016), specializing in modeling and texturing.

How did you get started in the industry?

I got started in the gaming industry right as I was finishing my studies at Gnomon. I got an internship at Gadget Bot Studios working on the VR project Kaidro: The Awakening. After That I went on to work at Survios where I have been since. With Survios I worked on 4 shipped titles: “Raw Data”, “Sprint Vector”, “Battlewake” and “The Walking Dead: Onslaught”.

What are some of your favorite work pieces that you have created and why?

Some of my favorite pieces involved creating a Kraken type creature for “Battlewake”. It was a nice momentary departure from creating environments, and it was even more exciting to see the creature come to life after the amazing work of our fantastic animators.

What drew you to VR specifically?

I think VR is a great way for people to experience an artist’s work, especially being able to be so close to some of the assets we create. It’s so important to make sure everything looks good considering players may be able to get right up to the object created. Especially with environments, it’s amazing to see people just look around and enjoy the work we created.

What is your favorite type of art to create / work to do?

I know this may sound like the safe answer, but I love creating art for games, regardless of style. I have worked on 4 games where the art style varied drastically and it was incredibly fun! Each art style provides its own set of challenges and I really enjoy that. I tend to vary art styles for my personal work as well, depending on what inspires at the moment.
